Observed

A thought from Megan

It occurred to me today that design students can be quite entertaining to observe. We really do a lot of funny things. For an example, we tend to think that we can carry every single thing that we own all at once, sometimes while juggling a cup of coffee, and often while ascending three flights of stairs. We’re really quite ambitious, and adapt well out of necessity.

I’m interested in generating a list of the “observed.” A peer to peer collection of those ridiculous things that we as design students do. Allow this thread to start collecting observations as you observe them. Feel free to post as much as you’d like as often as you like. I’ll start with another recent thing that I’ve observed below:

Design student carrying not just a single cup of coffee, not a jumbo cup, not even a thermos; rather a “to-go” case. You know…the ones for large gatherings that come with a pour spout and 12 paper cups. Ridiculous.

I don’t have a specific “sighting” to post, but “art school” in general is an entertaining place to people watch. Last year I had a friend call me on Halloween and ask me if people were dressed up for the event…I wasn’t sure how to answer that question. To the average outsider, every day is Halloween @ CCS.

Well, someone could say this about me if they wanted but I’ll beat them to it…I brought my printer to class one time…its about 35lbs and maybe 30″x8″x12″. At the same time I was also carrying a large plastic bag with mat board, large format paper for the printer, extra ink cartridges, xacto’s and spray mount. I was a one stop print shop!

I may as well roll a shopping cart. My baags are becoming larger and there are more of them now. And not only this there are baags inside of baags.

I should become more stream lined. Like some people only have one small tote with their lap top in it – or a book or two. But these baags are my life i carry my life with me without them i would be lost.

    ooh baags.

I remember this one kid didn’t have a laptop, so he’d bring his whole computer to class every day. I felt bad for him, but all I could do is lol all day.

    lol all day as well.

baags inside of baags is the current trend.

but also, carrying oversized pieces of foam core and mat board in the wind. and resorting to hoodies or paper instead of umbrellas when it rains.

both make for a bad day. and forget about having good hair.

sophomore year, a friend and i had to ‘camp’ at school all night in order to meet an AM deadline. we brought some blankets and pillows for a 1-2 hr nap under desks in the senior studio. we also brought a dreamcatcher to make the camping experience more authentic.

i am sitting hear reading evryone else’s posts about everything they are bringing to school and i feel like there are some situations which i can relate to. but in all honesty besides bringing all of my projects to review at the end of the semester i carry most of my junk to friends houses to do homework, and it is probably the most frusterating thing. I think it is necassary as a designer or art student you need to be organized and be able to carry things to where you are working or else you are robbing yourself of time you could be doing productive work. i can’t count how many times i’ve gone to other places and accindentaly forgot small things i’ve needed and had to drive back to get them. printers, scanners, rulers, razor blades, cutting mats, laptops, books, cameras, paper…i feel like i could go on forever. so unless your staying home to do work we have to be prepared for certain things. it makes me think of aubrey’s last project when i read this post.

How bout the whole, “I live out of my car/ my car is my studio” phenomina? I see more and more back seats in the structure nearly piled to the rooves with rolls of paper, mat board, sketches, t-squares, portfilio bags, computer bags, desks, tables, chairs, lamps, couches…

sometimes i see people on the wayne campus smoking weed, ours is just a bunch of people carrying stuff

  11. fd5daryl — October 18, 2007 at 12:35 pm

Well it would be kind of hard to smoke weed while carrying stuff, so I guess it’s better that we do the more productive of the two.

    It isn’t entirely impossible, Daryl.

When I was attending the freshman orientation, there was a graphic design senior who volunteered to speak with us. He showed us his schedule, and the designated times he slotted for sleeping. I believe it was a few hours monday night, and then a few more hours wednesday afternoon.

More importantly, he had a coffee thermos attached to a carabiner on his belt. I thought he was just being dramatic to mess with us.

At some point during the end of last semester, I became “that guy,” with my stupid mug attached to my belt at all times.

Several fine young african-american youth have offered to sell me drugs outside of university tower on several occasions. However, I would much rather deal with the constant circus parade – and every now and then marching in it – at CCS than Wayne Campus’ budding (heh, heh) entrepreneurs.

***Well it would be kind of hard to smoke weed while carrying stuff, so I guess it’s better that we do the more productive of the two.***

Use your imagination Daryl, and when I say imagination, I mean one of those paramedic breather bags, some duct tape, and a whole lot of enthusiasm.

    Dkapa,
On a little adventure to a BP in Dtown, myself and Adam went inside and as we were waiting inline to pay for some brake fluid that i had to buy(it dumped that morning and when i drove off for school my brakes barely worked, but i had to keep going to get to class on time) a nice Detroiter asked Adam if he wanted some weed and instinctively Adam said no thank you. I think its quit ridiculous that people just ask other people in broad daylight, in a gas station, in front of people, if they want weed…. RIDICULOUS!

  16. mindrei — October 21, 2007 at 2:49 am

I think my favorite thing to see is people carrying Full sized Foam core boards across campus on a windy day along with everything else they’re carrying. Its quit amusing…
